SIOP: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol Model

The SIOP (sheltered instruction observation protocol) model is a program that helps address the needs for English language learners. Teachers learn how to integrate students and use specific content and instruction to address the students. From the SIOP model there are eight key components; lesson development, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice, delivery, and review/assement. Under the eight key components teachers promote a healthy positive learning environment by incorporating meaningful activities, understanding prior knowledge the student has, applying critical thinking, encouragement, promotes student engagement, and provided feedback. For example, a SIOP teacher may acknowledged prior knowledge an EL student has and create a base line which the teacher will then add new vocabulary to expand the student knowledge and understand of the English language. After reviewing chapter one in the book Not-So-Common Learners (NSCL) the thing that stood out to me the most was who was considered NSCL
