Servant Leadership Principles

The principles of servant leadership consist of listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, and the ability to build a community (Spears, 2010). As a charge nurse of my unit, I am a servant leader who applies all these principles in my daily life. I listen to my coworkers patiently and become aware of the issues they are facing in their professional and personal lives. This awareness makes me empathize with them. The empathy would allow me to persuade them to take the right steps towards the healing process. The foresight from my previous experiences enables me to be a good steward. I can help my colleagues and contribute to their growth by supporting them. My support helps build a united staff community in our unit and enables me to form skills in conceptualization. …show more content…
She was an experienced nurse. She had problems in getting adjusted with the new computerized documentation and with the existing young staff in the unit. After a month of joining to the facility, she has decided to submit her resignation. I came to know about this and had a meeting with her. I listened to her issues and empathized with her when I came to know her problems. With my professional experience, I explained to her the best way to tackle her issues. I encouraged and offered my full support in helping her learn the tasks that were difficult for her to understand. This act helped her professional growth as a nurse. My foresight enabled me to mention to her about the possible reactions of the coworkers to her reluctance in getting mingled with them. As a good steward, I could motivate and persuade her to stay in her current job. As a result of these acts, I could build a community in our unit that would accept this new staff as a productive member of our team.
