Description of Nurse Leader/ Manager:
A leader is an inspiring person who implements a combination of different factors that manage to deliver a clear vision to the people. As a nurse leader, the focus is to instills guidance, integrity, and patience to fellow nurses. For example, I was able to follow Jo who is a charge nurse. She has 12 years of charge nurse experiences and is considered to be the nursing leader on the IMC unit. Charge nurse Jo possessed strong leadership skills such as being flexible, empathetic, self- confidence, and had a sense of humor. Jo motivated other nurses to engage in the hospital’s overall vision of promoting positive outcomes by performing safe nursing care to all patients. Therefore, a huddle before every shift

I witness that charge nurse Jo has a lot of close relationship with the nurses on the unit. This shows that the other nurses respect Jo as a charge nurse and acknowledges her decisions. Positive feedback is crucial in motivating the nurses who may be stressed (Papathanasiou, et.al, 2014). Even a simple “good job” may be enough to motivate the nurses to achieve higher and to prevent nursing burnouts, especially with the rising acuity levels and high patient to nurse ratios (Papathanasiou, et.al, 2014). Charge nurse Jo obtain the role of being a motivator by being readily available to help if another nurse has a question. She would approach the questions with empathy as if she was caring for a patient. Charge nurse Jo did not disrespect her peers and had seemly maintained a strong positive relationship with every nurse on the unit. Her sense of humor encourages the other nurses to have a relaxed/ fun demeanor while focusing on the patient’s care. Reducing stress on the unit will ultimately result in an increased confidence and empowerment of nurses to provide high quality of care (Papathanasious, et.al, …show more content…
I admire the charge nurse’s leadership attributes and how she implemented her skillset on the unit. She managed to control the flow of the unit very well by helping out whenever she can. For example, when most of the nurses are busy with their assignments, charge nurse Jo would answer call lights and help transport patient to a different unit. Also, she would even help hand out breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the patients who are not NPO. These are the little things I noticed as I helped the charge nurse answer call lights and pass out trays. Taking initiative and lending a hand to other nurses will contribute to having a positive and respectful
