Espoused theory of leadership A leader whom I admire is the head of the department where I work. This person possesses many good qualities which I aspire to emulate. These qualities include humility, sincerity, honesty, integrity, tenacity, trustworthiness, responsiveness, courageousness, competence, participation, democracy, and inclusiveness. The traits identified are consistently manifested by my head of department in the execution of her tasks. These traits make her stand out because not many leaders in the organisation exhibit all of the named qualities. She is professional in her deportment and in communication with others. For instance, when she has a sensitive matter to discuss with a single member of staff, she does that in private, she listens and communicates her views firmly but not condescendingly. As a consequence of her positive attitude to work and demeanour, my head of department has built a good working relationship with staff. She is approachable, persons can trust her and can count on her to look of for their welfare and that of the organisation. Therefore, leader and staff talk to each other about any concerns instead of talking about the issues behind of each other’s backs. I am convinced that each one has worth and value, their suggestions matter and should be considered. I know that no one can work in isolation, therefore, teamwork is critical to getting the job done. I believe that each one using his or her own expertise can come together to accomplish tasks and fulfil the vision of an organisation. I believe that a leader’s active participation in an organisation can also motivate others to participate. I believe that leading by example will inspire staff to follow and to do their best, once they know that they are an integral part of the organisation. Given human nature, I believe that everyone wants to be respected, therefore, respect should be given. On one hand, my most pleasant experiences with leadership are when I am treated respectfully and my contribution is valued. On the other hand, my most unpleasant experiences are when I am taken for granted and disrespected. I therefore pursue a democratic participative, style of leadership.
