Reflection On Servant Leadership

Improved Essays
As a student-athlete we are put in a leadership position because of the university environment. It is our place to use our time and talents to set a worthy example for other people to follow. I have been reflecting on the meaning of servant leadership and its use in diverse settings; I found I have very little understanding about the concept. Because of my limited knowledge of the servant leadership model I need to become more aware of diversity types, for example, the diversity between ethnicity, personality, lifestyle, and income. Also, I need to reflect on the ramifications of not handling diverse situations. I learned more about the subject of servant leadership through the community service project, in which the class participated.

My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. My leadership model, as similar as it may be to that of Greenleaf's, came from home.…

With scandals such as Jerry Sandusky's sexual misconduct at Penn State, academic scandals in various schools, sexual misconduct at Baylor, Maimi and others, it leads one to realize the collegiate sports culture needs a drastic overhaul. Burton et al. (2017) propose that organizational climates that lead to unethical behavior among leaders, administrators, and coaches seem to be more the norm than the exception in Sports organizations, and therefore needs an immediate cultural reform in the ranks of leadership.…

Using the Servant Leadership Theory does have its downsides, unfortunately. One issue is that other leaders utilizing other leadership techniques could see the Servant Leadership methods as weak. One of the biggest issues with Servant Leadership Theory is that the leader is constantly sharing things as opposed to keeping thigs like information and power to themselves (Daft, 2014). This leadership style could make other leaders underestimate the power that a leader using the Servant Leadership Theory maintains. I know particularly in the Office of the District Attorney where I currently work, other departments are predominantly male-run, by men who have no qualms giving orders.…
