St. Joseph Women's Health Clinic

Saint Joseph women’s health clinic provides comprehensive care to the female population including but not limited to prenatal care. The clinic itself is located in the center of Providence, an area of a multicultural undeserved population that often depend on translators in order to communicate with the medical staff. The hours of operations are Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 12:00 with a daily influx of patients that varies from ten to sixteen patients per day. The building is very old and might benefit from some renovations, the equipment is very dated, therefore, the care is limited and often relay on referrals to other clinics for advance care. All those downs do not interfere with the compassion and dedication that the enthusiastic staff provides care to these patients. I arrived to the clinic at 8 o’ clock on Monday February 6. The nurse was multitasking and did a great job keeping up with all her responsibilities. She was the only nurse during her shift, there was not secretary or assistive personnel, and therefore she needed to balance her nursing job with the office needs. When the patients arrived, she was the one that performed the triage which included vital signs, past and present medical history, assessment, documentation, and undressing assistance and prepared the equipment for the physician. While there I assisted her not only with those nursing task, but also with translations assistance. She understood some Spanish but was not fluent, so it was easy for the patient to communicate with her in their native language. She was very helpful to the student, she answered questions that I had and explained the procedures to me. The doctor was very open to teaching, I accompanied her to the rooms to perform her medical exam. I assisted her with the language barrier with the 90% of the patients that day.
