Servant Leadership Model: Robert K. Greenleaf

My definition of leadership is very simple: leadership is having the ability to mobilize and empower a group towards a common goal. I find that with a much general definition of leadership as a base, it allows for different styles and theories to come from it. My preferred leadership style, for example, is the servant leadership model. The servant leadership model was formalized by Robert K. Greenleaf. My leadership model, as similar as it may be to that of Greenleaf's, came from home. More specifically I credit this desire to help others to my mother who exposed me to the teachings of Jesus Christ at a very young age. As a leader of my community, I consider self-sacrifice an option that may need to be taken, if in the end it will help help others. I believe my needs are not to be put before the needs of those who I am serving. Though I do not consider myself to be religious, the teachings of Jesus Christ have influenced my leadership style. …show more content…
I am a member of Phi Sigma Tau International Honor Society, Scholars Without Borders, and The National Society for Collegiate Scholars. I was awarded, Outstanding Youth/Student Volunteer by Association of Fundraising Professionals for National Philanthropy Day, Emerging Leader from the Dean of Students, and Dean's List. Starting my first year, I felt very fortunate; not only because I was the first in my family to have access to a college education, but because I knew I had my first year of college covered thanks to the help of grants and scholarships. From looking at my cost of attendance this coming school year, I see that I am still $1,651. Being concerned about having enough money to pay for housing is a concern that will prevent me from focusing on my academics and education.
