One instance of tone that becomes evident is when Extra Gum uses the voiceover of the parents telling their stories while home videos and pictures are being played. Another way the sentimental tone is created is when the father is proposing to the mother and you can hear one of the little girls yell “Ask her Mike, ask her” with excitement in her voice. The music played at the end is soft, slow, and adds to the sentimental tone also. The way Extra Gum started the commercial appeals to pathos from the start because it instantly tells and shows the mom and her two daughters, the first words are “You have this picture of your life in your head until something drastic happens and now I’m a widow at twenty-five being both mom and dad.” Then it goes to show a bridge with “Extra Gum presents A Second Chance” in white typography that makes the impression that the commercial wasn’t going to be serious or about selling the product, but rather telling a story that expresses hope. The commercial emphasizes the children involved and the adults’ struggles as single parents; which many people can relate too in today’s society.
