A Simple Love Story
In October of 2015, Extra Gum released an ad called “The Story of Sarah and Juan” pulling at the heartstrings of the 74 million people who viewed it the first week it was published, and many more after that. With the song “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” playing in the background, the ad features two average teenagers in high school, who happen to fall in love at the first sight of each other. The ad begins with the girl, Sarah, dropping her books in the hall as the boy, Juan, crouches down to help her. After he helps her, he offers her a piece of Extra Gum. Take, for example how towards the end of the progression of the advertisement, Sarah and Juan were seen in the middle of an argument. They were yelling at each other, and looked frustrated with one another and the scene around them. The scene around them was cluttered, messy, and set up the scene to look stressful. During that scene, Sarah sat next to Juan and offered him a piece of Extra Gum, and they both started to relax and feel alright. In addition to that, the couple also faced the challenge of long distance. Sarah was leaving for business, and left Juan back home waiting for her to come back. Right before she left, he sketched the moment on a gum wrapper, which would ultimately be added to his collection to later be used to propose. The gum wrappers and gum itself brought the couple together in times of difficulty, and inspired them to get through their everyday. This idea of overcoming challenges would appeal to the viewers because as they watch, they will be reminded of their fights, and challenges, and be reminded that something as small as a piece of gum could have the power to calm them down and bring them back to
