“Google Home”: A Rhetorical Analysis
Commercials featured in the Super Bowl must meet a high criterion to be successful. It is essential that these advertisements find the best ways to intrigue the viewer and eventually persuade them to buy the product displayed. Google seemed to be ahead of the game for this year’s Super Bowl. Managing to be the first official commercial of the night, Google introduced the new smart device in a way that hit close to home for many of us viewers. By breaking down this commercial, we see how Google succeeded to appeal to the intended audience by promoting the product with clever techniques, including examples of what it is capable of, and in the end persuading the public to purchase the device.

A defining feature of the Google Home commercial is the technique in which logos and kairos were both used. By having several distinct scenes, they managed to demonstrate the variety of tasks that the device can accomplish. From answering unsettling questions, obeying straightforward commands, and even translating a foreign phrase to English. Google was also very clever in the way they used kairos to their benefit. Similar to many other advertising companies, Google knows how popularly watched the Super Bowl is worldwide. However, the fact that they chose to be the very first commercial of the night was a very clever act. The Google Home commercial was the very first commercial the spectators watched; thus, giving it the opportunity to create the first impact on them. The timing this commercial was planned and the use of facts, details, and examples about the capability of the device succeeded in persuading the spectators. At the very beginning of this ad the music automatically sets an easy, comforting feeling. Every scene in this commercial has an emotional affect, but there are a few that significantly seem to impact the onlooker. For example, it is assumed that most families can easily relate to the scene of the couple coming home with the little girls asleep in their arms. In a different picture, a little girl runs into her father’s embrace who seems to be coming home. Later in the commercial another young girl is shown with her father reading her a storybook. The man says, “Okay Google, what sound does a whale make?” and the device responds with the answer effortlessly and instantly incites giggles from the girl. Incorporating scenes like these is an effective way of not only promoting the item but also connecting with the viewer in a deeper level. This entire commercial is based upon being at home. No matter the situation, Google home proves itself to be a sufficient and very useful device for any home. Throughout the commercial, the viewers can relate to the characters and situations portrayed. It is a clever way to keep people intrigued on the item and connected to the screen. Google did a great job in combining the elements of ethos, logos, kairos, and pathos to create a commercial that goes above and beyond.
