English Language: Course Analysis

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case. All the reading assignments were intriguing, and I thought critically because of the questions that were asked. An example of this comes from the last homework assignment where we read The Sports Taboo by Malcolm Gladwell. “Gladwell kept his eye on this runner because he thought that there was no way that this person would …show more content…
Every time a due date would come up for a major assignment, we took time to review each other’s work. I do not remember much from these various encounters, but I do remember receiving helpful comments. Granted, I may have felt upset by some of the things said, but I knew that the criticism I had received was right, and I wanted to do better because of the evaluations. This was unusually for me because before this course, I would hardly listen to others since I thought I was always right. Yet, that changed because I wanted to improve my writing, and to do that I had to listen to other people’s ideas. Also, you would walk around the room and check our work during class. That was how I was able to come up with my thesis statement for the visual analysis. Without you checking on the class’ progress, and seeing that I had made none, I would probably still be working on the visual analysis. Instead, you talked me through my image and the argument I wanted to make, which lead to an interesting

The readings that were assigned throughout the semester covered a multitude of topics. The topics covered included education and school, gender, media, and globalization. The readings that I most enjoyed were the first ones assigned which included “A Question of Honor”, “Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age”, and “The Myth of Inferiority”. The reason why these readings interested me the most was because they fell under my favorite topic of education. Education is one of the subjects I find the most interesting.…

In my ENG 301, I learned about literary studies and criticisms which helped shape my paper for my ENG 497a. I don’t think I could have written my senior paper without that course, so it was beneficial for my progress as a student. Admittedly, I have had to unlearn several things while attending this college in order to progress as a student; I learned incorrectly how to cite sources in-text, so I had to first unlearn that in order to learn the proper way, and my professors were patient enough to understand. I had no idea how little I knew until I attended this university and the professors gave me the skills and knowledge I was so apparently…

When I decided to return back to school, math and English requirements were my biggest worries, however taking this course has helped me improve my writing skills and also given me more confidence in my writing. For example, reviewing grammar rules such as when it is appropriate to use “an” and “a” has helped me tremendously due to being out of school for decades. Reviewing the instructor’s feedback and finding out what errors I made is great, it helps me to understand and correct my mistakes for future references. I have also been able to gain confidence that I did not have prior to this course, now I am no longer intimidated to write a paragraph or even several paragraphs. How can I be a better writer than before? That was my first question I had this semester. I didn’t feel that I can compare my writing with my other classmates who are all their native language is English, or at less lived their life speaking English.
