Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case. All the reading assignments were intriguing, and I thought critically because of the questions that were asked. An example of this comes from the last homework assignment where we read The Sports Taboo by Malcolm Gladwell. “Gladwell kept his eye on this runner because he thought that there was no way that this person would …show more content…
Every time a due date would come up for a major assignment, we took time to review each other’s work. I do not remember much from these various encounters, but I do remember receiving helpful comments. Granted, I may have felt upset by some of the things said, but I knew that the criticism I had received was right, and I wanted to do better because of the evaluations. This was unusually for me because before this course, I would hardly listen to others since I thought I was always right. Yet, that changed because I wanted to improve my writing, and to do that I had to listen to other people’s ideas. Also, you would walk around the room and check our work during class. That was how I was able to come up with my thesis statement for the visual analysis. Without you checking on the class’ progress, and seeing that I had made none, I would probably still be working on the visual analysis. Instead, you talked me through my image and the argument I wanted to make, which lead to an interesting

Coming from that and placing to an Ivy League school, you should be represented. Peer reviewing was a little difficult, everybody has their own style of writing and it hard to break it down and find the certain errors, but I have been getting better at it. Certain things I left out in my essay that my peer reviewers mentioned was to make my ideas clearer and specific, along with smoothing my transitions before jumping right in. In fixing my essay, I have made my transitions more smoothly starting with a little thesis to it, than backing up what I say. I made these changes because it was hard for a person who never read the book to wrap their head around what getting…

Not only this method helps me build my vocabulary, it also enhances my understanding of the text. I also learn to read around the text (like reading the title, heading, caption, etc.) before actually reading the text itself. I do not know about other people, but I always skip them whenever I read books or any other forms of text. I used to think that they are not important, and I can “save” myself some time if I skip them.…

Reflection When I first registered for this class I knew I was facing a challenge. I took this class because I was looking forward into improving my creativity as a writer and learned more about the different styles of writing. Looking back at the goals I set for myself in the beginning of the class I would gladly say I have some what accomplished them. My goals in the beginning of the class was to improve my writing by becoming more of a show and not tell kind of writer. I also put down that I would like to become more of an open-minded writer.…

I looked at my paper as another character not as Stephanie Moscoso because Stephanie would not change her papers. My portfolio process was similar to the process of how I developed my essay for Two Kinds. I decided to be an author and judge myself not too harsh though because that is never good, but well enough to fix my paper. I wrote all my problems down and looked at my goals for the semester, and one of them was analyzing better, so that is what I did. I used my goals for inspiration to fix my paper and also the notes of my typical problems to help me.…

When class started I did not know that it would be as difficult as it is but overtime I have adapted and learned how to do work, properly. My writing was not the best and I had many people help me and I researched many ways to improve my writing. One of the worst things I struggled with was my grammar. I usually did not check my writing when I finished and would always just revise and edit my essays instead of letting someone else look at it. This class has helped me to let someone revise my essays for me.…

I knew that the work of the classes would be taxing on my mind at first but I would eventually see the benefits of them going forward. I have not had the time to do everything that I would like to do for school and thus my grades have suffered because of that, although my teachers may not see it as me pushing myself to a point of breaking I know what I am doing has not only been for my benefit but also my son’s. This has made my experience in the class and because I now know multiple levels of discipline and mental fortitude I have been able to produce more intellectual essays from when I started my journey through this class. My first attempt at an analytical essay was not met with much of anything, being that I had no experience in writing such a piece I struggled greatly attempting to put my ideas on a page. I was trying to combine everything I had learned from my past English teachers and apply it to my first real attempt at a timed essay that needed deep analysis.…

This semester I grew as a writer. I learned how to be a better writer and I used what I learned to improve my essays. To become a better writer you have to try hard, spend time in revising the essay, use proper sentence and paragraph structure, and it is also important to use different vocabulary words throughout the essay. Before this class, I did not like writing essays and I only wrote the essay’s that I was forced to write in my other classes. I did not enjoy writing in those classes because I was not learning or expressing my feelings about the topic and we mostly wrote essays about books.…
