Eng 497a Reflection

When I first started attending Southern Illinois University, I did not critically read or write very well as my arguments were just scratching the surface of the literary text. I would read just enough to anticipate quiz questions and answers, but did not care too deeply about what the text was attending to accomplish. However, through attending this university, there is a definite growth into close readings and critical writing. For instance, I am reading beyond the thought of a quiz or plot, and in my ENG 497a paper have considered where a text belongs and the importance of authority and authorship. I transferred to this college, so my first English course here was ENG 200. Within one year’s worth of courses a change in my writing can be already noted in my additional piece, which is the same paper from ENG 200, but revised for screening. I decided in the original paper that Austen wasn’t answering the marriage question, but when I was revising this paper I realized that actually she does. In my ENG 301, I learned about literary studies and criticisms which helped shape my paper for my ENG 497a. I don’t think I could have written my senior paper without that course, so it was beneficial for my progress as a student. Admittedly, I have had to unlearn several things while attending this college in order to progress as a student; I learned incorrectly how to cite sources in-text, so I had to first unlearn that in order to learn the proper way, and my professors were patient enough to understand. I had no idea how little I knew until I attended this university and the professors gave me the skills and knowledge I was so apparently
