Malcolm X once said, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” As this country’s demographic continues to shift, we must recognize the value of minorities achieving educational and economical success as a vital part of this country’s prosperity. In 2000, minorities comprise approximately 30% of the population in the United States(U.S Census Bureau). In 2010 that number increased to 37% and will maintain a steady increase. While the racial/ ethnic gap of minorities enrolling into college has made progress, Hispanics, African Americans, Native American, and Asian Americans continue to trail in earning college degree. In spite of these minorities struggling to overcome some of the same academic hurdles, they are also presented with exclusive barriers. For this research proposal I will present some social and financial barriers that are guilty for this poor graduating gap of minorities and present some solutions not only for the prosperity of minorities in college but the prosperity of this country. “ To understand the achievement gap , in an effort to begin to close it, improving the educational and employment opportunities” (Somers,1)
