Discrimination is perhaps most noticeable in the job market, where preconceived notions of certain groups changes the way a person is looked at. Particularly, even though a large proportion of the population holds some sort of disability, disabled people have had to face difficult obstacles in pursuit of careers. This is because employers believe that hiring someone with a disability will require costly accommodations, lower overall productivity, inferior products, a bad company image (making customers and employees feel guilty), and an ethical/moral obligation. These theories have been debunked over and over again, yet the statistics show that disabled people have the worst jobs, salaries, and prospects for employment. In fact, CNN Money shows that those with disabilities earn, on average, a $9,000 lower salary. On another point, women are also being discriminated against in the workplace. These institutions that center on education, showcase the progressiveness of Americans in the modern time. For example, a policy called affirmative action is being implemented in the most prestigious of America’s universities. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, affirmative action allocates increased opportunities for historically excluded groups within the application process. In addition, more financial aid and scholarships are being awarded to underprivileged families. All of these actions allow for increasingly diverse communities in colleges and universities. As a result, higher levels of education will help minorities prosper in better careers to escape poverty. Through this, they will gain better reputations to avoid further discrimination due to differences in wealth. To help the majority get to college, students of different backgrounds are being accommodated for in primary and secondary schooling. Programs that benefit disadvantaged kids are offered, such as including after-school tutoring, providing free and reduced lunches, and allowing students a secure place while they wait for their parents or do their homework.
