telling these students, was they are not worth having anything new because the administration felt it would seem like they were rewarding deviant students.

The effects of this social problem benefits most people who are wealthy because in order to get a higher education one would need the resources and money to pay for it. America is a credential society. You can only achieve and get ahead depending on what credentials you obtain from school. Those who are poor are not able to afford college and most will not be able to obtain a higher education. People who are not able to get a higher education are not able to get a high paying job. People are then stuck where they are and not able to get themselves out of poverty. With low paying jobs,

In regards to the film, The Freedom Writers, it took one person, in this case, a teacher, Erin Gruwell, to stand up to the bureaucracy of the school system and provide students with respect, trust and hope. Though others feel students like the one in classroom 203 should be punished than rewarded. The result of punishing them does not work. Multimillionaire Eugene Lang returned to his old school which was located in a poor neighborhood, he gave the students hope and offered to pay for the college education for anyone who stayed in school and graduated. He also gave the community the support needed for students to do well in school, like tutoring and career counseling. The result of this was 90 percent in Lang 's group stayed in school and graduated high school. A promising future is necessary for success in school, especially if teachers as well as students believe that success is possible (Basirico et al. 2009). Another way would be if the United States has a federal board of education instead of a board of education in every school district. This will allow parents to send their children to any school they choose to. Right now students who attend a public school in New Jersey are not able to this. They are told where they can go to school in regards to where they live. Having a federal board of education will allow every student to have an equal opportunity to …show more content…
It is disturbing to think how minorities like myself were not and still are not provided the proper resources to achieve the right education. When coming here from Peru my parents always wanted me to live the American dream. That is to have the opportunity to have a successful and respectable occupation that provides a stable income to live comfortably in America. I always had a different perspective about people who did not take advantage of the free education that was given, but I have learned that education is not free at all. Instead, it is a business and those who can afford to pay for it are the ones who are able to live the American dream. The film, The Freedom Writers, has shown what is wrong with the educational system. I have analyzed the film from the power conflict and functionalism perspectives, I have discussed the effects of the social problems in all levels, analyze how society has influenced these social problems and identify possible strategies to resolve or to alleviate these social problems. The Freedom Writers, are an example of what can happen to a group of at risk kids when someone in the education system gives them hope for a better

Most Americans feel like they are failing to keep up with the gains between themselves and the wealthy. The article states that those who are neither rich nor poor may fall under financial pressure because they can’t measure the income of those who are wealthy. Many Americans state that the reason they are struggling is because despite the education level they’ve reached,…

Equity in education is proven to close the achievement gap and in order to make that happen, teachers and schools have to start now. “If we are serious about closing what I call the 'opportunity gap, ' it has to start with high-quality early-learning opportunities in disadvantaged communities that have been denied for too long (Duncan, 2013). It has been too long for students to be denied the right to go to college because they did not have the resources and opportunities compared to other students. The U.S education system promises to help prepare all students for college and graduate high school. However, if the goal of our education system is to ensure that all students leave high school ready for what’s next, be it college or a meaningful career, we need to provide students who need the most (and the schools that educate them) with more support, not less (Ushomirsky &Williams, 2015).…

Although Mabry believes that America is a land of opportunity I see that the American Dream has died because of expensive schooling, a hard economy and lack of jobs. In order for someone to get the proper education to succeed in today’s life they must be able to afford college. Even if they take student loans they have to spend many years working to pay off the student loans. Growing to be wealthy is…

    The Social Class System

This statement goes to show that the educational inequality that prevents an abundance of the lower class students in America from attending college could be the reason that so many Americans live in poverty. If people are unable to receive the type of education that would allow them to get well-paying jobs, how can we expect them to provide for themselves or their families? I think that it would be unreasonable for anyone expect the lower class citizens in the United States to fix things that are completely out of their control, such as the educational inequalities in our country. I have always felt this way, and I became even more passionate about it after I learned new information from the materials that we discussed during…

There are many paths you can take to get to where you want in life but I think America truly does give us opportunities we could not find in any other place around the world. There is almost this spirit of hard work that continues in this country. It seems like it is fading today because of policies being put in place to almost offset the need to work hard. The expansion of welfare and Medicare does not promote people to go out and work hard, it promotes laziness as people feel why push myself to be better when the government will just provide for me. We don’t want to rely on handouts, that gets this country nowhere, we need to keep a tradition…

I trust free school educational cost ought to be given and financed by the U.S. government since it will help understudies concentrate on their studies, and urge them to work harder in school. A college education should be free. There are so many people that are extremely smart but can 't further their education in college because they can 't afford it. It would really benefit the poor community. I think that free education is good for some people and other people could care less.…

In colleges over the United States, students are not able to fulfill their educational dreams. In the United States, tuition costs, for colleges, are pretty expensive. They will become overwhelmed with homework and their studies, if they do not do these things one would fail and be kicked out of college. On top of that students have to work to pay for, schooling, possibly rent, food, and the list can go on and on. This means a simple report card really doesn 't mean anything when it comes to high-school but society is so taken by high-school grades and how important they are, when the real important thing is actually learning something worthwhile. Another way to improve college readiness is to stress to high-schoolers about how important knowing the classes you need to take is. When they become freshmen the kids will more than likely put it off and not care, but it is essential to keep reminding them.…

Many institution don’t have the students best in mind, but rather their tuition. Often times this conflict of interest puts the students at the short end of the stick as long as it’s minor enough. Additionally, as the article “Here’s How Bad the Job Market Is If You Don’t Go to College” describes, the question for many isn’t whether or not they should, but if they could. The problem is amplified by that government is considering stepping out of the game, “[they’re] meeting less and less of the need even as college costs spiral to record highs.” For many impoverished families that are living from paycheck to paycheck, they simply cannot afford to use four long years of their life when they could be bringing money home, even if it’d be more beneficial in the long run. In conclusion, many of the points made in Caroline Bird’s article “College is a Waste of Time and Money” can be characterized as logical fallacies and therefore don’t hold much weight.…
