Digging is a common behavioral problem in dogs and can be fueled by an assortment of different things. The first thing you need to know when solving this problem is that your puppy is not doing this out of spite or just to make you mad. Sometimes people tend to think that leaving your puppy outside is enough of an exercise, which is not the case. If you leave your puppy unattended and full of energy in the yard, then he is bound to dig and stir up trouble. The obvious solution for this is to get your puppy more exercise. You can do this by retrieving, walking, and swimming with your puppy. "A tired puppy is a good puppy"
Another leading cause in digging puppies is boredom. When your puppy is left alone in the yard they need entertainment. The goal is to make their entertainment non-destructive so they are not doing things like digging. The best way to create non-destructive entertainment is to leave your puppy toys to play with and chew on. Kong type toys that are filled with treats work particularly well distracting a puppy for hours.
As with most behavioral problems, one cause is the puppy's craving for attention. If your puppy often digs when you are around or you don't interact with your puppy much, then this might be your problem. The solution to this is to ignore this attention seeking behavior and praise good
