How to Train a K-9 Unit Dog K-9 dog training is a long process that not only takes up the early lives of puppies but most of their adult lives. It is important for officers to train dogs because K-9 unit dogs’ help officers look for evidence where officers cannot go, save lives, and fight crimes. When the puppy lives with its partner, it should get used to getting told commands. It is important for the dog to get along with the handler because the officer or handler only get one dog to be their fulltime partner so both dog and handler must be able to work together and understand each other. The dog also gets to know the character of the police or handler (master dog). When living together, the dog can roam the house but still has to follow orders. If visitors or strangers come to the house, the dog is to be courteous to any visitor or stranger (soundoffsignal).
