Postponing School Start Times

Every morning is a battle to keep unglue their eyes and when they see the clock, the rest of the morning is a frantic mess. Most teens only receive a mere 7 hours of sleep each night. The healthy requirement for adolescents is about eight to nine hours per night. On top of that, 8 to 12 percent of kids skip breakfast and 3.3% to 9.5% middle school student are late each day. Postponing school start times would provide students time to eat breakfast and get enough sleep. Teachers and parents would also benefit from the later start times. Some schools start as early as seven A.M. forcing the adolescents out of bed and stumbling tiredly into the world. They face a biological sleep change causing them to fall asleep at 10 to 11 P.M.
