Teens need 8.5-9.25 hour of sleep each night,⅔ of them get less than 7 hours of sleep, 33 percent of teen report falling asleep in school, 43 percent of U.S. public High School start before 8:00 am.Irregular sleeping patterns affect number of endocrine, metabolic, and neurological functions that are critical to maintain a healthy life.The increase in academic demands,and growing social and recreational opportunities,all of which take place in spite of no change in rise time for school. Sleep deprivation has caused tragedy in the past; public health consequences of working at night,and sleep disorders are just the tip of the iceberg. Sleep loss causes high rates depression,suicidal ideation,and obesity.Long term deprivation also shows lower test scores,decreased attention span, tardiness,concentration,and overall academic achievement.Students who don't get enough sleep often suffer physical and mental health problems, an increased risk of automobile accidents and a decline in academic performance.The reasons for teens lack of sleep are complicated, and include homework, activities, after-school jobs and use of technology that can keep them up late on weeknights.
Although students might say teenagers should go to bed earlier if they are tired and need more sleep but these people do not understand how different an adolescents sleep cycle is.Even if students wanted to go to bed earlier it can be proven challenging.this is because of the small gland in the brain that controls sleep cycles that is not produced until later in the
