In 2012, President Barack Obama delivered a speech at Newtown High School to console his sorrow to the families of victums and assure the community that they are not alone in such a difficult time. His speech was directed to multiple people as he opened his speech with “To all the families, first responders, to the community of Newtown, clergy, guests” (1). He conviced everyone that a school shooting could have happened anywhere and they are not alone by saying “They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school” (5). Obama’s speech is inspirational yet frustrating. He inspires his audience to learn from the shooting and correct the mistakes.…

In recent days, there has been many problems come to surface over gun control. From Sandy Hook, Columbine, Orlando and Colorado, many people feel we need to do something about these shootings. Some believe that that the way to solve this is to ban firearms altogether, and others feel we should arm every citizen. I think that a happy middle would be a great way to start. The firearm ban from 1994 had little to no noticeable effect because it left normal law abiding citizens unable to arm themselves and criminals (surprisingly) still didn't heed the law.…

Mass Shootings The anti-gun crowd would like us to believe that with more guns, comes more gun violence, but since more and more states have allowed people to carry a side arm, crime has declined. Can these things be a mere coincidence? Perhaps, but even if that’s true, it still proves that allowing law abiding citizens to be armed does not increase crime, and suggest that it contributes to lowering it instead (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). Something else to ponder is where do mass shootings occur?…

School shootings are a trend that unfortunately has been getting popular for more than a decade. This is causing schools to increase security and prepare for a potential war against unknown individuals. This has shown a negative effect on a significant amount of students who now see school as unsafe. Metal detectors, security cameras, and many other security safeguards have been a regular necessity for schools. Instead of using these things as a last resort effort to prevent violence there needs to be a less invasive plan in place that limits the security presence on campuses without it being overwhelming.…

Guns are used all around the world, but here in the United States, we need to keep our gun usage limited with gun laws. Gun laws are put into action to make sure firearms are used responsibly; however, people will always find a way to break these laws no matter how many are made. Our Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, gives U.S. citizens the right to own a weapon and use it for the right reasons. Gun laws will not reduce the amount of gun deaths in the U.S. because gun laws do not determine crime; gun ownership determines crime numbers. There were 460,000 gun deaths in the U.S. between 1999-2013 and this was the 12th leading cause of death.…

According to Wihbey (2014) the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a report confirming that mass shootings had increased from 2007. “From 2000 to 2006, there were an average of 6.4 annually; from 2007 to 2013, the average more than doubled, rising to 16.4 such shootings per year.” It would be easy to assume that anyone committing these crimes to be mentally or emotionally unstable. But with years of mental health research has shown only a small proportion of people committing these crimes to be diagnosed with a mental illness. It is unfair to blame an entire population, due to the actions of a few.…
