Students especially like laptops and tablets because they tend to be exposed to those most of all. Laptops can cause a positive change on how students feel about school subjects. School subjects that students usually feel are challenging or uninteresting can become more interesting with access to laptops. When students are not in school, just about everything that they do is connected to technology, in some way. Through integrating laptops into the class, students feel more of a connection with the material. Students can use laptops to access virtual lessons, a video, or online tutoring. In the article “When Each One Has One” Deborah Lowther observed a class of fourth graders and explained “The majority of the responses (56% of 257) indicated that the laptop made schoolwork easier, faster, and more varied due to the use of the Internet and CD- ROM resources” (Lowther 38). When laptops are involved, elementary students are increasingly likely to participate. With higher levels of participation, the learning environment becomes more welcoming for students. If young children are educated on laptops early in life, then they will learn how to become more responsible users. One solution to the misuse of laptops includes acceptable use policies. Teachers need to set guidelines about how students use laptops. Then the teachers need to explain the polices to the students and the disciplinary action if students break the rules. With polices children need to become aware of the risk that come with the internet. Early in the year, teachers should talk with their students about the need for responsible use of the resources available through the web. One solution to help students understand the risk of the internet is to have them visit “Cyberethics for Kids”, at the website of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
