Intellectual Independence Dbq

Derek Bok saw that the use of laptops and iPads in class has become a very common thing in today's educational society. With that observation he saw that students taking notes on their iPad or laptop had more opportunities to distract themselves. Studies have shown that students who use technology in class damage their education (Bok,Derek). Regulating the use of technology in our everyday lives is a very important skill to have today. Without the regualtion When we don’t regulate the use of technology we end up becoming dependent on them and lose our intellectual independence. A DBQ is where the teacher has done all the research for you and gives you questions to answer. He noticed when his students were given a “real research paper” they became increasingly frustrated when the internet didn't led them to the right source (Matthews, Jay). The more they depend on technology the less they allow themselves to grow as students. They lose their natural intellectual skills by searching up the answer on google rather than trying to figure it themselves and refine their problem solving skills. Having intellectual independence allows students to gain experience by learning from their mistakes when correcting themselves in test or homework, without those experiences it's hard to grow as students. Nowadays technology in general view limits people’s life experiences. In a book by Susan Maushart, she The Winter of our Disconnect talks about the experiences a family of our go through when they abandon technology for a entire winter. her experiences when she and her family abandoned technology for an entire winter. She says that “I wanted my kids to experience this… to enlarge themselves to discover themselves.
