Summary Of Disconnection From Technology

The main idea of this article was that disconnection from technology could allow a person to have a different perspective of him or herself and the people around him or her. Erin Cotter noticed that her twin daughters were addicted to technology and felt that too much technology could cause her twin daughters to constantly think negatively about themselves. As a result, Cotter came up with the “Disconnect” project. The purpose of this project was to target teenagers and reflect their use of technology along with coming up with a series of activities a teenager could do without using technology. Technology has given us a lot of benefits, but we should realize there are times when we should say no to using technology. Cotter implemented her “Disconnect” project into schools. However, it was rejected by many teachers and administrators. People said that they would not give up their phones for a week. Also, the class began to have a discussion about the ups and downs of technology and came up with a plan of activities, such as sporting events, that they could do without using technology. Finally, students gave their smartphones to their teacher with the condition that they could only use technology to do homework and nothing else. As a result of this project, students from Llewellyn’s class had a different perspective of living without technology for a week. They had more social time with friends face-to-face, finished their homework on-time, and desired to gain more knowledge about life without technology.
