Personal Narrative: The Incredible Sport Of Ice Hockey

Decent Essays
I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable.

I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively. When I first began he helped me by buying me a brand new pair of skates to help with my propulsion and edgework. Hockey is all about skating capability and stick skills when you cut it down to the bare basics. That is what you work on throughout your entire career, so that you can be as good as the pros

When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

The morning practice for the Tahoe Icemen, the team that Mickey Lang is currently in his first year of coaching, was long and grueling, but by Mickey’s enthusiasm that morning as we spoke, it appeared he’d be ready for round two as soon as the interview was over. I’m always curious about how someone initially gets involved in a sport they fall in love with. Was the passion passed down from a previous generation or was it their very own discovery? I start the conversation out with that question, “So when and how did you find the sport of hockey?” Mickey responds, “I was 3 years old and my father took me to a rink that was about 5 miles from my house and I immediately started skating and was probably about 4 years old when I started playing hockey.”…

The day started on a typical chilly, wet and windy twenty-eight-degree day in March. After school, our lacrosse team boarded the bus to play a scrimmage. During warm-ups, like I routinely do, I looked around for my mom and dad to give them a hello wave. At that moment, the realization struck me. For as long as I have grown up participating in team sports in western New York, without exception, I have been able to count on my parents being there on the sidelines, regardless of their work schedule or the weather.…

I was never really a hockey fan, although I had STL Blues merchandise around my house, mostly owned by my mom or step-dad. No sooner had I determined that I desired to attempt field hockey than my mother had begun inquiring to our neighbors about the best leagues to partake in. She quickly acquired a sufficient amount of information to register me for a beginner’s summer camp at the 422 SportsPlex. At this point, I was incapable of doing anything but waiting for the camp to begin. Even so, I did not handle this wait patiently; in fact, I was quite the contrary. Excitement at the thought of this new adventure had overcome me.…
