The day started on a typical chilly, wet and windy twenty-eight-degree day in March. After school, our lacrosse team boarded the bus to play a scrimmage. During warm-ups, like I routinely do, I looked around for my mom and dad to give them a hello wave. At that moment, the realization struck me. For as long as I have grown up participating in team sports in western New York, without exception, I have been able to count on my parents being there on the sidelines, regardless of their work schedule or the weather. Although they have had their fair share of snow piling up on their boots, water saturating their clothes, or their toes and fingers ever so cold in hockey rinks, they were present for every game and practice since

Alyssa and Arielle Scavo grew up in a world few little girls ever get to experience. They played and cheered on the sidelines of countless high school football games. They logged hours upon hours in baseball clubhouses, while also cheering on the sidelines for their school’s football. And they were in and out of training rooms where they occasionally had the chance to mingle with top-notch athletes who received care under their father's watchful eye.…

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

The Tournoi International de Hockey is the biggest youth hockey tournament in North America and is held each year in Quebec City, Canada. Every year thousands of kids ages 10-12 come to this tournament, and I was fortunate to be one of the selected players from Georgia to play in this tournament. Through this two week tournament, I got the chance to stay with a family from Quebec and experience what they do on a daily basis. With this family, whom I am still in contact with today, I learned a new culture, got to tour the city and have some memories that I will never forget. To add to the experience, all the games were played the Pepsi Colisee, which is a NHL sized rink.…

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable. I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively.…

He and I made our way off the field against the murmuring wind and light snow. Snow melted on our faces and removed any trace of our despondent emotions. I took a step onto the bus and looked back one last time at the Benilde–Saint Margaret’s Soccer field where I played my last soccer game. The images, sights, and smells of my last soccer game at Benilde–Saint Margaret’s. The wave-like roar of the crowd, the frigid snow sticking to my warm-ups, the icy air breathing in and out of my lungs with heavy breaths, and the final score illuminated in bright red letters on the scoreboard.…

You may only be at a ball park to witness a no-hitter once in your entire life, if ever. But to be on the team that is throwing one, an even rarer accomplishment. The possibility of being the pitcher to actually throw the no-hitter itself, almost the rarest feat in all of baseball. Excitement, adrenaline, rushed through me every time I threw the ball to home plate, and knowing that I was one pitch close to keeping the opposing team hitless. While playing some may think you feel the pressure of the game; however in my experience I felt stress free, which left my mind to only think about what pitch to throw next.…
