Personal Narrative: Moving To Florida

Decent Essays
What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming. Even though I started school with an exorbitant amount of homework, my parents and I swam at an olympic size pool religiously every Sunday. Did you know that, if one goes swimming after school and before doing homework one tends to focus better? After a long and tiring day of school, I just hop in the pool and come out feeling like a different person.Whenever

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

The school was also more rigorous, competitive, and academically challenging, so she didn't have time for the her favorite activity, swimming... One event would change her thinking forever. She was on the varsity swim team at school and on a private league. On both teams she won the California state championships in A rank multiple times during her time at that school. Swimming on two different leagues took up basically the whole day outside of school, from five in the morning to sundown, with little time in between.…

My dad went to Atlanta and purchased a restaurant in Perimeter Mall ( upscale mall in Dunwoody, GA) where we opened up Malibu Wings and another one near Georgia State University on Peachtree Street. I finally got paid after all these years.…

I am a dad and I have three great children. One night when we were downstairs watching a movie when the kids were asleep, I said to my wife, Amy, “I want to move to a more exceptional place so the kids can grow up in a better environment,” Amy said she wanted to do that too. “ It would take a long time and I wanted to find a new job because my original job is moving to Texas.” Right now we were living in a small town called Eagle. I told the kids if it was a good idea.…

Hawaii, the home of white sand beaches, pro surfing, hula dances, and warm weather. If I could move to any region within the United States, I would move to Hawaii with no hesitation. Hawaii contains a prestigious hospital and the opportunity to become a surfer. Both of which of which I have always dreamed of being a part in. Nothing would make me happier than becoming an orthopedic surgeon operating out of a Hawaiian hospital working on shark attack victims and other unlucky victims who need orthopedic repair, then go straight to the beach to surf and relax for the remainder of the day.…

Swimming and working wasn’t very fun though because after morning practice I would go straight to my job, then after guarding all day in the heat I would go back to a hard afternoon training in the sun. There were days where my sunburn limited my body movement or a dehydration caused massive headaches, and me want to quit swimming. I thought to myself that if I didn’t keep fighting when a little sun made life was hard, how I would pull through for my family in actual challenging times. However swimming brought me peace, joy, my best friends, and these will always be outweigh the hurdles. Whenever I’m feeling stressed or angry, swim has always helped me relieve those…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…

Family or sports-it seems like a simple decision, right? Not for me. My family has been getting together to have Thanksgiving since before I was born. I love seeing my grandparents, hanging out with my cousins, and most of all, the sweet, juicy, tender turkey that my grandmother cooks for us every year. On the other hand, I had set some high goals for me in swimming such as making the state swim meet.…
