One night when we were downstairs watching a movie when the kids were asleep, I said to my wife, Amy, “I want to move to a more exceptional place so the kids can grow up in a better environment,” Amy said she wanted to do that too. “ It would take a long time and I wanted to find a new job because my original job is moving to Texas.” Right now we were living in a small town called Eagle. Years ago I left my home state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue and I moved to the not so great state of Montana. Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

When I was six years old, I started to get moved around from house to house. I lived in North Chicago, Illinois in a 3-bedroom red and burgundy colored house. I loved playing in the basement with my cousins and sister. We would hang a white hanger from the ceiling to act as a basketball hoop and use balled up socks to shoot baskets. We would stay down there until my granny called us up for dinner.…

As someone who grew up in a safe city with a supportive, middle-class family, and enrolled in a public school system that offered an abundance of valuable classes taught by extremely qualified teachers, I was blinded to how others live. As I became old enough to understand that the majority of people in the world would never live like me, I wanted to do something to change that. I was taken aback by the conditions of the families I was to help on my mission trip just south of me in Tennessee. I was not in the same United States that I knew. But that wasn’t what shocked me the most.…
