Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…
A journey to Georgia Today Gravesend is perhaps best known as the final resting place of Pocahontus and as the site of the London River House, the port authority for the city of London. In 1732 Gravesend, 15 miles east of London on the Thames River, was one of several unrelated port cities that served the capital of England. It was from Gravesend that 114 men, women and children along with James Oglethorpe, pastor Henry Herbert, Doctor William Cox, Captain John Thomas and a crew of 20 set sail on Friday, November 17, 1732 for the new colony of Georgia. They would make one stop between England and Georgia: at the island of Madeira, where the ship would load 5 tons of wine for the journey Before leaving a bureaucratic hierarchy was established.…
I moved to Wilmington just a little over four years ago and one day when I was exploring Wilmington I decided to take a tour at UNCW. After touring UNCW that day I instantly knew that UNCW would be the perfect school for me in the future. If I get into UNCW I plan to major in finance. And with UNCW having a great business school, with the Cameron School of Business being there, I would be able to pursue my degree there. I have heard many great things about UNCW from friends and faculty.…
When I have traveled, I have seen a lot of different things such as landscapes, air quality, plant life, etc. When I was 2, I moved to Miami, Florida, which I don’t remember much about. Then we moved to Columbus, Georgia where I spent half of my childhood. Georgia looks way different than here in Virginia. The air and the land is drier and it’s more humid down there.…
Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…
It was hot and humid. I was a stranger from the other side of the Earth. I had never been in Atlanta before. The only thing that I knew about Atlanta was 1996 Olympic Games through TV. I was not sure how long I was going to stay here and what to do for living.…
For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…
All of my job hunting had been based in Virginia where we were currently living. However something tugged on my spirit to pursue Colorado. I talked with my wife and we both decided that a faith move to Colorado was the best solution. I packed up my car with as much of my stuff as I could fit and spent two days driving from Virginia to Colorado. I had a lot of time to just think and…
I moved to Titusville in the middle of my junior year, to get better schooling, and to use my full potential academically that I wasn't able to obtain back in my hometown. Moving across Florida, away from my parents was a dramatic event, and it took some getting use too. Living away from my parents, made me feel grown and mature like I had my whole life in my hands with nobody there to always tell me what to do. I, now live with my aunt and uncle, attending Titusville High School. I am a part time college student and also acquire high school credits with my courses at the college.…
Growing up in Mississippi as an African American young woman has given me a different perspective of life. As I reflect on my life, my childhood came with morals and values that were instilled at an early age. My mother and father had three beautiful children, two girls and one boy. We were taught to always be respectful to our elders. We were taught to say yes or no mam and sir.…
Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. The first four years, both my parents had full time jobs and my grandma helped raise me a lot, she taught me so many manners and how to behave, she even ended up living across the street from me for 2 of those years, they were rough for my parents, new baby, just moving, having to find jobs, making friends, and getting food on the table for me. Thats where my amazing family came in, with bringing home cooked meals…
My father finally found a job in Florida. Being in florida, I began to feel a little down, from missing my mother and having a new step mother. We lived in Florida to 2015, when my dad decided to move back to Texas. I graduated from high school, before he decided to move. As we all were packing up getting ready to move, my dad decided to send me back to Alaska, to attend college.…
The House It all started on Wednesday September second. That was when my parents broke the news to me and my younger sister Lauren that we had to move to a new house. We had to move from our house in Connecticut all the way to Ohio. I wasn’t excited about the whole moving thing because I like my house here in Connecticut, but we have to do what our parents tell us. Our parents didn’t ask us if we wanted to move, They drove down to Ohio, found a house they liked and bought it.…
In early fourth grade, I moved to North Carolina from Florida with my dad. We moved in with my grandma and grandpa. We lived in a microscopic 2 bedroom apartment in a city called Cary. I was always very close to my grandma; she was like my second mom. I helped her cook and clean and we would occasionally watch Ellen together.…
I am petitioning for a retroactive withdrawal from spring semester 2016. During both the fall/2015 and spring/2016 I was asked to move back home to become the primary caretaker of my 92 year old grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Initially the routine was simple, school, work, and my grandmother. During the year while being the primary caretaker of my grandmother I was also working maintaining a twenty hour work schedule, which at the time seemed to work out for both myself and my family. Keeping up with the school work didn’t seem to be an issue until the work load from my course began to pile up, having to commit so much of my time to my grandmother as well as school and work was just too much for myself to keep up with.…
