Personal Narrative: Cheerleading Tryouts

Cheerleading Tryouts “Come on Lauren you’ve been doing this way too long, you’ve been on the team every year since you were 14.” I said to myself as I walk through the halls of my High School. Today is May 24, the first day of the annual cheerleading try outs and for some reason I’m extremely nervous even though I’m a three year veteran. I go through my classes talking to all my other cheer friends saying how this is going to be a breeze and how we can’t wait to start the season even though my stomach is literally overwhelmed with butterflies. DING DING DING!!! The bell rang as the clock hit 3:30 and my heart basically jumped out of my chest. As I walked to the gym floor my body began to tremble as if I was prey who just met their …show more content…
She gave us instructions as to what to how she wants it done and in what order. We all lined up and got ready for the dreaded kicks. ONE! My foot hit the floor softly. TWO! The same hit again. THREE! I slammed to the floor. I didn’t feel anything at first and was very confused as to why I fell and couldn’t get back up. I looked down and screamed so loud I swear I felt the floor shake. In front of me lay my leg with my knee cap completely popped out and on the left side. I screeched and screeched “SOMEONE HELP ME SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!” but everyone just stared. It felt like slow motion, everyone staring but no one helping me, everyone looking in utter horror and shock of what had occurred. Finally, the coaches ran to me in a panic yelling at others to go get help. Water overwhelmed my eyes as some ran to the back of the gym in fright, while others rushed to comfort me. One girl who I was relatively close with told me everything would be alright I just had to let the school physical trainer, who had rushed to the scene, pop my leg back in. I was absolutely terrified of the trainer even touching my wound but to pop the leg back in would be ludacris! I began to ask over and over again if I could still try out, no one knew how badly I wanted to be on the Varsity team even with my leg completely discombobulated. The trainer told me I’d be fine and recover in enough time , which I later found out he was just saying so I could stay calm, but the truth was my leg wouldn’t fully be healed for months. After much persuasion from everyone around me I decided to let the trainer pop my patella back in so I wouldn’t have to go to the hospital. I bit down hard on a t-shirt and counted to three then we straightened my leg out. Finally the easy part was over…. Yes the easy part cause the journey after this injury was far

I texted my dad to have him run home and get me some Ibuprofen, and I’m sure I must have taken enough that night that my kidneys will never forgive me. When Eric came to get me to warm up, I got up and did an awkward limp to the door. He asked if I should still be running, and I assured him that I would be fine. At this point, no amount of pain medication would work, and I stepped up to the start line fully expecting to finish in last place, have Quisno find out about my injury, and freak out at me. I ended up running almost 30 seconds slower than my best time, but I still managed to finish in 5th place to help out the team.…

I always felt like everyone had a special talent accept me. Some could paint, act, play sports, but that was never me. I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…

I was not sure what area of study I wanted to pursue a career in, but I knew that I had an affinity for the sciences and the medical field. It wasn't until two years later, my Junior year, that radiography became the area of the medical field that I knew I wanted to concentrate on. I have been a cheerleader since third grade.…

I used to be so afraid of failure that I wouldn’t even challenge myself. I thought it was better to excel in classes that I knew I could pass than to challenge myself and accept the grade I earned. Cheer taught me that being a student-athlete doesn’t mean that I have to take the easy way out. I took my first AP class during my junior year and was able to ace it using the qualities I learned through cheer. I even challenged myself further by taking two college courses and an AP class during my senior…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
