My Knee Surgery

First varsity basketball game, first quarter, 3:53 left on the clock. We were playing Ridgway at the time. On defense, everything was going great. I got a steal up the left hand side and I was pushing so hard ready to score the first 2 points of the game. There were two girls from the opposing team in front and behind me so I didn’t have anywhere to go. I jump stopped and went up for the shot. As I was in the air, a girl from Ridgeway pushed me. I tried to land and catch myself but I just couldn’t. Next thing I felt was a sudden grind in my left knee, popping in and out, and I just dropped feeling the worst amount of pain I have ever had in my whole life. All I remember was lying on the ground, freaking out, wondering what had happened. My knee

He came and put his hand on shoulder, bent down and shook his head with a half smile. “I don’t know what to say kid. I need you, I didn’t want this happening to you. I’m already missing you out there. Hopefully everything will be fine. I’ll be praying for you,” he then said. All I could do was look down and tears started to fall from my eyes. I didn’t get why something like this would happen to me. I had worked so hard to get my varsity starting spot, put in my time and effort and this happens to me. I couldn’t deal with knowing someone would take my spot and be better than me. I always wanted to be the best, it killed me to see someone else in the game, running the play, scoring baskets, and having it not be me.
After the game we all headed into the locker room. While everyone walked ahead in front of me I felt useless. Then Mae the only girl who actually tried to help me walked back with me and put my arm over her shoulder and helped me walk into the locker room. Even though she was tired and just wanted to sit down and drink water she was right there to help me get into the locker

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…
