Personal Narrative: Becoming A Member Of The Dance Team

Decent Essays
It had always been a dream of mine to enter high school and be not only a member of the dance team, but an officer or a colonel. Since I am an experienced, competitive dancer and have been dancing since I was 3, becoming a member of the team was fairly simple, but I knew becoming an officer would be a challenge. I became a member of the team my freshman year and instantly fell in love with the change of environment. When sophomore year arose, being apart of the team became tedious, but my yearning passion to become a captain continued my intense drive.
When tryouts rolled around, it was a stressful two weeks filled with achy muscles, late night papers, and various tears. In May 2015 I did not make the officer line. My dreams were crushed and I started to give up on the thing that I cherished the most, dance. Days and weeks I stayed awake contemplating many thoughts in my mind, and finally I had come to my decision. I quit the dance team.

I desperately was looking for a home, a family to accept the stray that I had become. Move Dance and Fitness became that home and now I am a second year captain, role model, and apprentice of their competitive dance team.
Over the two-year course with this studio I have discovered more about myself and my passions than anywhere else I have trained. I have discovered my love of teaching, my yearning to extend my creativity outside of the studio walls with interior design, and my new dream to continue dancing in college. If I would never have faced the trials of not making the officer line, I would not have grown into the person I am today by those I met along the

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

The short interview with Lauren Anderson is so inspiring that gives me an insight into passion and success as well as motivates me to persist in following my dream. Anderson’s story of her career as a principal ballerina seems quite simple and typical as she started early at seven, soon became a principal dancer of Houston Ballet, and then now is giving back to the society by teaching ballet to children of “underserved” community. However, I believe behind that story are all strenuous efforts and untiring perseverance along with her outstanding talent that kept her lifelong dream alive and made it come true. I can feel in her a great passion for the ballet career in every word she said and every story she told. Because ballet is hard and highly…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Something happened on my dance team this past summer where I received an award for “Most Improved Dancer”. I was feeling discouraged as well as confused on what I wanted to do involving dance in general. The support from my directors and teammates could not have put a bigger smile on my face. All of the claps, hugs, and high-fives meant so much to me. .I was filled with pure happiness, but had so much uncertainty on whether I wanted to stay committed or remove myself from this group.…

Establishing these invaluable attributes early on made it possible for me to become an NCAA Division III lacrosse athlete. Sports dramatically shaped the person I am today and taught me how to step to work in unison with my teammates to achieve a common goal and simultaneously step up as a leader.…

According to my birth certificate, I was born eighteen years ago on May 9th, 1997. While that statement is true, I would like to think that my life truly began only sixteen years ago in August. Generally, the month of August is not very happily anticipated due to the fact that school is quickly approaching and the calm, relaxing days spent outside are coming to an end. However, one particular August in 1999 turned out to be one of the beginnings for some of the best times of my life. Why is that?…

The biggest regret I had was not becoming a competitive dancer sooner. I had convinced myself that I wouldn’t make the team, and didn’t try out until last year. After being a part of the team for a year, and seeing how much I grew, I decided to perform a solo. The solo improved my technique, and my self confidence. My main goal going into it was to let go of my fear of failure.…
