Paper #1
My summer place, Lodhpur
Located at 23.89N, 72.24E, Lodhpur is one of the smallest villages in Gujarat, India, but it holds a big place in my heart. It’s where my grandparents grew up and it’s the home of my dad’s childhood. Each summer I visited my grandparents in Lodhpur to take care of them, and it always turned into an adventure filled with excitement and curiosity. The warm breeze, the scorching sun, sleeping under the moon and the love in my grandparent's eyes are some of the things I dearly miss about Lodhpur after moving to America six years ago. My summer place is where I can set myself freely into nature and better understand my life and its origins.
My family lived in Mumbai and it was about twelve hours away from Lodpur. We always took the train to Lodhpur because not only was it much cheaper but much more exciting. I still remember playing cards with my brother and getting lost looking at the countless acres of land outside the train. Once we reached the station, we would be greeted by our grandparents with kisses on the cheeks. We would later drive to the village in my grandpa’s old Premier Padmini. The AC didn’t work but it had windows for the wind to breeze through. First thing I would do after arriving at my summer place is meeting up with the village boys. Together we would go do some exploring and dive into small pools, which were designed for the cattle to drink water from. It was very disgusting if I think about it now but it was very fun at the time. Before I knew it, they all had to go back home to help out their families with work or labor. It made me unhappy but it also gave me a chance to wander alone into the wilderness. On my adventure, I saw different cattle, new crops and the pond that resided in the middle of nowhere. Lodhpur was a small village but it was filled livelihood and was always blooming with nature. I could just feel the freedom and peace surging through my body and it was something that I just couldn’t get enough of. Compared to the busy and corrupted streets of Mumbai, this place was like paradise to me. My grandparents grew up in Lodpur and have never moved anywhere else. They were farmers their entire life and were very poor at the time. My dad was the first generation in my family to get educated and move to the city. I learned from my Mom that my Dad used to do labor on my grandparent's farm and manage his studies at the same time. One day wandering through the farmlands, I noticed my friend working on the fields in the burning heat. Just looking at the village kids harvesting crops on someone else's land affected me greatly. It made me …show more content…
