Harmful use of alcohol results in the death of 2.5 million people annually, it also causes illness and injury to millions more, and increasingly affects younger generations and drinkers in developing countries. About 4% of all deaths are related to alcohol. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is a great example of how alcoholism kills. The author to this book is Sherman Alexie. There are many themes present in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. One particular theme that is present throughout the story is alcoholism kills. Many of junior’s friends and family have died due to alcoholism. Spoiler alert! One example is when one of Juniors dad’s friends died due to alcohol. “Way drunk, Eugene was shot and killed by one of his good friends, Bobby, who was to drunk to even remember pulling the trigger.” (Alexie 169). This is a quote from the book showing how alcoholism killed Eugene. If either one of those two men hadn’t been drunk this tragedy would never have happened. As a result of both of them being drunk, Eugene died. Spoiler alert! The second example of how alcoholism kills is when Junior’s sister dies. “...TOO FREAKING DRUNK to feel pain when she BURNED TO DEATH!” (Alexie 205). As a result of Junior’s sister being drunk, she will not wake up as the fire burns her and her house down. Alcohol is the source of her death.
