Alcoholism is a known problem in society; it’s defined as “a chronic disease including uncontrolled drinking and preoccupation with alcohol.” It’s also known as alcohol dependence, and is a very common disease that can last for years or last a lifetime. In the article Substance Abuse and Addiction- Topic Overview, it shows that alcoholism has a large effect on ones everyday life. This is shown much throughout the novel For One More Day by Mitch Albom, when the main character Charley or “Chick” as he is called in the novel gets addicted to alcohol. Charley’s drinking started when his mother died and he wasn’t present in the situation. His mother’s funeral is where Charley started drinking uncontrollably. It was soon after his mother’s death that Charley started drinking more until it soon became a problem that ended his and his wives relationship. He and his wife started having money problems and they fought about it constantly. Their marriage collapsed and charley says “I left my family shortly thereafter- or they left me.” (Albom, 5). Charley had a daughter Maria, she refused to invite him to her wedding, and this is what set charley over the edge. In the article Substance Abuse and Addiction- Topic Overview, it says “Alcohol abuse can harm your relationships.”(Substance Abuse and Addiction Health Center, 2). This is exactly what it did for Charley and his daughter. Charley says “Apparently, through my drinking, depression, and generally bad behavior, I had become too great an embarrassment to risk at a family function.” (Albom, 6). Maria didn’t have her father at the wedding because she was worried that because of his alcoholism he would embarrass her and her family at the function. Charley’s uncontrolled drinking worsened after this. Charley says “You get shut out of your only child’s life, you feel like a steel door has been locked; you’re banging, but they just can’t hear you.” (Albom, 7). Charley explains that it was the dumbest thing he’s ever done financially. He started not caring about work, and he was getting fired from his sale jobs. Getting fired from these jobs made his money situation worse and caused him to drink even more. Shown in the article Substance Abuse and Addiction- Topic Overview, it says that alcohol will cause one to miss work. It became hard for Charley to find work because of his alcohol addiction. He said “When I did find work, I hid mouthwash and eye drops in my pockets, darting into bathrooms before meeting clients.”(Albom,5). This showing that Charley couldn’t even control his drinking during his working hours. In the article Substance Abuse and Addiction- Topic Overview, it says “You might be dependent on alcohol if…You cannot quit drinking or control how much you drink.” (Substance Abuse and Addiction Health Center, 4).
