It was my first day of training. UCSD Medical Center (or whatever the name is). First stop: Emergency Room. As I walked inside I saw doctors and nurses bustling about. To my left a resident was stitching up a bicyclist who had been in an accident.…
Directly observed, participated and managed hospitalized patients in ICU unit. Observed and supervised directly by Rahat Hussain MD, of Memorial Hermann Hospital (1028 bed hospital) in Houston, TX. Obtained direct clinical experience working within an advanced, U.S. hospital under expert supervision. I was responsible for my assigned patients, from whom I took histories, reviewed daily lab reports and overnight events and update their progress to Dr. Hussain during rounds. I attend clinics where I gather H&P and presents cases and discuss management plans.…
Those with low-income or the uninsured may be more likely to use the ED rather than to access a primary care physician. This may be related to their complex social, behavioral health, or physical health needs that are difficult to address in traditional primary care settings (Crane et al., 2012). In the Kern Medical Center study, they were able to reduce the ED visits of the frequent uninsured users of the ED by providing the group with case management services (Kern et al., 2012). Care management proved to be a cost-effective way to improve the psychosocial problems that were common among the uninsured. These issues may be related to homelessness or home insecurity.…
My work as a medical assistant at Rigel Dermatology not only allowed me to gain invaluable exposure to the daily life of a doctor, witness the special doctor-patient relationship, and learn countless medical knowledge, but most importantly it taught me about myself. Through my interactions with patients, I learned the true importance of communication, empathy, and…
This is a biannual event which I am able to attend only the events in October. On October 2015, I volunteered as a dental assistant in restorative dentistry where I assisted other volunteer dentists in amalgam procedures. On October 2016, I volunteered as a volunteer sterilizer, where I utilized my multi-tasking ability to ensure dentists have clean instruments available at all time. The speed and efficiency of the entire clinic depend on our work and preparations as a team. Both years were two days shifts, including optional shadowing that I participated before my actual shifts.…

Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…
Shadowing a physician provided me with direct exposure to medicine, allowing me to engage with patients and interact with physicians. I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…
The goal of providing the best possible patient care requires flexibility, listening carefully to patients, and working as part of team. I am an excellent listener, care deeply about patients as individuals, and am fully invested in working collaboratively as part of a team. My unique volunteer experiences allow me to think broadly and outside-the box about health care systems in general and patient care in specific. My excellent work ethic, fundamental curiosity, and…
The consequences of a badly written note to a patient, it shown that the office is not really concerned about the patient weather they understand or not. Word choice is critical to pay attention to when communicating with patients in writing, because it can lead a good impression toward the patient and they might have a positive feeling. If the office used a a simple word and bad wriiten, the patient likely to think that they are not professionalism as what they supposes to be at the facility. As a medical assistant in ensuring the communication is clear and writing properply by using a corret word not as abbreviation, for adult patient using the words stomach or abdomen is appropriate. If the patient is under 4 years old, consider using the…
INTERNAL MEDICINE ESSAY It is not the symptom that defines a patient; it is the broad outlook. I remember my 22-year old patient who had generalized seizures associated with altered mental status and rapidly progressive weakness for all her four limbs. She had a history of seizure disorder that was being treated with medications and she did not have an episode for past 5 years. Her test results came back normal and we were unable to find the underlying cause for her condition.…
My responsibilities included shadowing attending nephrologists and fellows during morning rounds and daily consults where I observed patient management in intensive care unit, indoor and emergency room. I used to be an active part of case discussions with the team during patient encounters. I was able to see a variety of patients with nephrological issues including electrolyte disturbance, acid-base imbalance, chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease, acute renal failure. I also had the chance of observing the procedure of percutaneous kidney biopsy in detail. I used to visit the independent dialysis unit regularly where I learned basic principles and technique of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and CVVHD (continuous veno-venous hemodialysis).…
The air conditioning did not function, you could feel the sweat running down your clothes and you could see the one inch mattresses laying on what it was supposed to be a bed. These are hospitals, Venezuelan hospitals, which are supposed to be places where people are treated and not incarcerated. I am from Venezuela and when I was 10 years old, I started volunteering with my mother at the Pediatric Hospital of Maracaibo. After witnessing not only the hospital’s condition, but the patients’, I wanted to find a way in which I could help them. As watching doctors work with patients, I felt something inside me that desired to be like them, a desire to assist and cure people like they did.…
