Belonging is feeling included and accepted in a group.
Othello marries Desdemona without her father’s permission. He then is sent by the senate, as part of army business, to Cyprus from Venice. Iago swears that he is going to bring Othello down for “sport and profit”. He uses Roderigo to get Cassio demoted, which he does by having Roderigo anger Cassio into attacking Roderigo. Cassio wants to reinstate his name with Othello. Iago encourages Cassio to achieve this through getting Desdemona to put in a good word for him. Unbeknownst to everyone Iago is convincing Othello that Desdemona is unfaithful to him with Cassio. Othello in his jealous rage, caused by Iago, and under the belief that Cassio is going to die, kills Desdemona. It is revealed by Emilia that the handkerchief, which was a key reason behind Othello belief that Desdemona was unfaithful, was actually stolen by her and given to her husband, Iago. Due to this revelation Othello realises what he has done and commits suicide.
In Othello, Othello’s separation from is society is because he is black. As part of Iago’s reasoning to the Duke that Othello would be a bad addition to his family is purely because Othello is black. “Your daughter covered with a Barbary horse, you’ll have your nephews neigh to you, you’ll have coursers for cousins, and jennets for germans.” Iago uses animals as a comparison to the type of people that the Duke would then be associated with.
