There you go, son! The pink liquid I had just swallowed tasted like rotten sweet candy. Born and raised in Taiwan, I remember the different flavors of cough syrup I have taken as a kid. If I were coughing continuously from a cold, my parent would immediately run to the pharmacy to purchase some medications. The medications cabinet in our home eventually was stock with a variety of medications that I have taken or my parents have taken.…
Booth Quotation: “The truth is that to make students assume a controversial pose before they have any genuine substance to be controversial about is to encourage dishonesty and slovenliness, and to ensure our own boredom” (p. 23). Booth Paraphrase: According to Booth (2017), we guarantee our own boredom when we make students adopt a controversial stance before they have any true feelings on the issue itself, and in doing so, we encourage sloppiness and dishonesty (p. 23). Klass Quotation “Some people seem to become enamored of the jargon for its own sake, perhaps because they are so deeply thrilled with the idea of medicine, with the idea of themselves as doctors” (p. 48).…
Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare The documentary, Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, criticizes the current healthcare system designed for profit maximization, a physician’s dilemma between financial incentives and professionalism, and quick fixes rather than prevention of illness. The U.S. government spends $2.7 trillion annually on healthcare, an average cost of $8,000 per person as compared to $3,000 in the rest of the developed world (Escape Fire). From $2.7 trillion, $300 billion are spent on pharmaceutical drugs every year, almost as much as the rest of the world combined (Escape Fire). The mindset that drugs are the only appropriate way to treat disease is invalid.…
Vanessa Ambtman-Smith, or “superwoman” as her husband calls her, has defied odds. From overcoming homelessness, mental health issues, and addiction, to becoming one of the leading advocates for racism as a social determinant of health in Canada, Ambtman-Smith strives to create an equal healthcare system for all Canadians. Ambtman-Smith, an Indigenous woman herself, says the experiences and injustices she has faced in her life time, encourage her every day to keep fighting for what she so strongly believes in. “It drives my passion for what I do.…
I recently had the chance to listen to an entertaining lecture by Dr. Wes Pilkington. As he began talking, I could tell that his speech was going to be somewhat different than those I had heard before him. While he did not do a residency and was not extensively involved in leaderships roles like many of our other speakers, he has still found success after graduation. Although these activities are both important, he highlighted the significance of our rotations. He also offered us a unique perspective on the dangers of pharmacy, as he was the victim of a pharmacy robbery.…
Paper 2 – Dilemma: Addressing Health Disparities Group 11-1 Grace Geiser, Rachel Goettl, Brianna Hoenig, Greta Petersen, Lisa Pham, Paige Schwoebel As one of the most trusted and accessible professions in healthcare, pharmacists have a substantial role in impacting the lives of their patients. However, there are often barriers that contribute to patients not receiving the best outcomes. For instance, many patients are unable to access healthcare due to their socioeconomic status; 23 million Americans are uninsured despite the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) expanded coverage (source?), resulting in necessary healthcare services not being utilized.…
Statistics also state that nearly 1% of hospital admissions have an adverse drug event (Runciman, Roughead, Semple, & Adams, 2003)As a graduate nurse looking to continually improve and develop my practice I need to develop strategies that will help me progress towards this goal. This goal will help to prevent some of those adverse drug event and prevent some of the medication admissions entirely. Being in a position that is directly responsible and accountable for the administration of the medications in a lot of the cases means that I need to continually strive to improve and maintain a high level of medication management. I have already mentioned a few strategies that I believe will help me to continually develop those skills to a desired level. familiarising myself with the medication will help to reduce the risk of a medication error slipping through and effecting the patient.…
When one thinks of slow medicine you think a slow process. A process when doctors take there time with their patients really getting to know them and understand their issues. Slow Medicine is just taking the time to talk, examine and even re-examine a patient. Ask advice from other doctors. Go over lab tests and X-rays of patients.…
Skimming through the list of novels under ”Freshman Summer Reading Assignment,” I raised my eyebrows at a title, How Doctors Think. The title triggered me to think back on my senior year internship with a neurosurgeon, Dr. Daniel Lee. I shadowed him every Friday at his office and even in the operation room. Surely, each visit delighted me significantly, for such clinical and operational experiences were exceptionally limited to high school student. At the moment, I strived to learn how a doctor reads MRIs and identifies an accurate diagnosis and treatment of illnesses.…
You (maybe use “one” ) might be very ill one day, so you might go to the doctor's’ office to get a check up. During your medical visit, he or she hands you a piece of paper. The paper consists of the medication that you need to use in order to feel better. You then drive to your nearest pharmacy to redeem the prescription signed by the doctor. But the pharmacist refused to fill your prescription up.…
Apothecaries, people who sold and distributed medicine, were prime factors of the Elizabethan Era, as well as the Four Humors. Even though many people could have thought the Apothecaries were made up ideations of legitimate doctors, they played one of the greatest roles in the medical fields during the Elizabethan Era, because their practices are still relevant, they discovered herbal cures and chemical breakthroughs that helped save lives, and paved the way for pharmacies centuries later, alongside the beliefs of the Humors. During the Elizabethan Era, Apothecaries and the Four Humors went hand in hand. The Humors, being blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm, were all associated with one of the four elements of earth, air, fire and water…

Are you having second thoughts about a nursing career because of something a friend or relative said? Don't abandon your dreams before you know the truth. It's easy to become discouraged when you hear myths and rumors intended to dampen your enthusiasm. Unfortunately, many misconceptions about the nursing field are accepted as common knowledge, but they're relatively easy to debunk. Some of the most common are listed below.…
I recently completed my first community pharmacy placement with Ashton Pharmacy. On the placement, I could understand how the team works together professionally to provide person-centred care. During the day, I dispensed some medication under supervision and guidance of the dispenser in charge. I was introduced to the different prescriptions that come in daily and shown how pharmacists use the BNF as a reference source to check if the prescribed dose is right for the person who will be taking it. When the pharmacy and staff got busy, I used the BNF to familiarise myself with drugs on the shelves.…
It is “expected” that our patients use medications and it is our task as physical therapists to understand how medications can affect the patient’s response to physical therapy (Ciccone, 2016, p. 3). Knowing this, we should understand the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the medications that our patients take and how medications affect a patient’s response to exercise. It was indicated in the article by Beiderman (2005) that the fusion of “clinical pharmacology and physical therapy practice” can be helpful to our “patients and to the physical therapy profession” (p. 366). It was also indicated in an article by Greathouse et al (1994), that military physical therapists can be authorized to order “certain analgesics and NSAIDS” (p. 263).…
