There you go, son! The pink liquid I had just swallowed tasted like rotten sweet candy. Born and raised in Taiwan, I remember the different flavors of cough syrup I have taken as a kid. If I were coughing continuously from a cold, my parent would immediately run to the pharmacy to purchase some medications. The medications cabinet in our home eventually was stock with a variety of medications that I have taken or my parents have taken. The next time when one of us catches a cold, my parents would conveniently grab a medication that treats a similar condition to give it to my brother or me. I did not realize the danger of my parents’ action until I started learning more about medications in my molecular pharmacology class in college. As part of the Wagner Pharmacy Mentorship Program, I trained new pharmacy personnel and patients on Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS), for instance, the correct usage of a cane, a walker, and wheelchairs. I also evaluated policies and procedure to maintain pharmacy accreditation. To improve health awareness in a predominantly Spanish speaking and low-income community, I performed hypertension screenings to educate patients of the importance about maintaining a healthy blood pressure. After a blood pressure measurement of a patient, who complained having a headache, I concluded that she was hypertensive. With a translated hypertension handout I created, my hand gestures, and the translation of my co-workers, I reminded her that her anti-hypertensive medication ready for pick up and educated her importance of lifestyle changes. Despite the language barrier, I am determined to educate patients about the importance of lifestyle changes to prevent the development of hypertension regardless of what their backgrounds or languages they
