I study, do my homework, have a job, and completely responsible for my actions completely different from what they expect from a young adult. There have been many aspects of agents of socialization that helped me become the person that I am today. My parents taught me the meaning of working hard and the essential things like talking, walking, and the importance of acceptance. By looking at the quotation by Richard Rodriguez, “Working class students must separate themselves from their family and their family’s values in order to succeed academically,” I will argue that students should not have to separate themselves from their love ones in order to be successful academically. I grew up in a relatively small Southern California town, surrounded by shrub-covered mountains and filled with a constant, smothering heat. My house is a simple, one-floor, ranch-style on a suburban street, in the middle of a triad of my elementary school, my junior high school, and my high school. Suffice to say, school was never out of walking distance. My parents are hard-working and traditional Asian-Americans, and I grew up immersed in our Filipino culture. I like to think that it was from my parents that I recieved my work ethic.…
