Reflective Essay on Adolescence
My Experience
The phrase each student is unique also applies to teachers. Each teacher teaching style, instructional strategies, and relationships are unique to them. I only remember one two teachers I had that used different instructional strategies besides the basic “I lecture; you take notes” format. The two teachers were both math teachers, specifically geometry and trigonometry. I rarely remember just sitting the whole class period to take notes and listen to them lecture the class. They had the class move throughout the class period, eliminating the monotonous fifty minutes of listening to the same person talk. They both asked for student input and differentiated their lessons to keep students from being

The two major ideas I want to change from my experiences are the use of literacy in science classrooms and differentiated curriculum. I understand that I will need to approve my practices with my administration and have their support before they will ever be fully effective. I want to use books in my classroom beyond a textbook. I do not want to be the teacher that teaches directly from a given textbook and never broadens their horizons beyond that information. Textbooks are excellent resources, but being limited to only one book does a disservice to my future students and the future minds of our …show more content…
I want to have a library in my classroom. Even if the books in my classroom library are not all content specific, they are still of a higher level of literacy. Also, with them not all being science specific, then it will be of interest to a wider range of students. Second, in science many times the names of many aspects of science do not come from the English language. For students to be able to recognize the root of words will be helpful not only in my classroom, but once they become adults. I want to teach students the roots of basic words of other languages and provide them resources to learn on their own. Languages such as Latin, Arabic, Greek and others are the majority of root words that make up scientific dialogue. This is one of many ways to provide diverse knowledge, fundamental knowledge, and a literate environment in my classroom

Chapter 3 discusses the “Myth of Adolescence” reminding us that the term “teenager”. The term “adolescence” literally means “to grow up.” Our current culture is unfortunately over defined by the existence of teenagers and adolescence. They make the case that expectations can be powerful in one’s life, for good or for detriment, and they make the case that in the Bible, there is no category for “teenager” or “adolescent.” An elephant is an incredibly powerful beast that can be restrained by a piece of twine.…

The purpose of this assignment is to analyse how a child’s life is socially constructed, in relating to their development into adulthood, addressing particular issues that consider essentialist and deterministic perspective of the transitions faced during adolescences. In brief description essentialist is how one perceives themselves during situations they cannot control, and deterministic is things that can be controlled by prior conditions, such as decision making. Using the following quote which is about a child’s experience back in the 1915 “And according to the law I was damned. I had no money, I was weak, I was ugly, I was unpopular, I had a chronic cough, I was cowardly, I smelt…but a child’s belief in its own short comings is not…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

It’s not every day that you volunteer to be humiliated, abused, and laid on by sweaty adolescent boys. Maybe you do; I don’t know your story. The point is that I personally wasn’t a huge fan of any of these things separately, let alone all in one wrestling practice. If you asked me in middle school how I would look back on my wrestling days, and how those days would develop me over the years, I would have shrugged.…

However, for my classroom I would like to implement more uses of books, such as history, dictionaries. I would have the students look up the definitions to their vocabulary words by using on a dictionary in class. I will also when ask what the definition of a word means have the students to take the time to look it up out of a book instead of on the web. I would also keep a set of encyclopedias in the classroom and have the students to write a report on something /someone within one of the encyclopedia using on the encyclopedia its self as the only source of…

According to Zooey Deschanel, nothing can be as hard as middle school. I was a tremendous scaredy cat when I started middle school in 5th grade. My guts were flipping and flopping on that first day. Even though I didn’t know any teachers or friends, I made new friends and met new teachers. I had Mrs. Wherley as a homeroom teacher, she was nice as pie to me.…

All teachers have a different philosophy of what education should be. This influences the way their classroom is set up and run which consequently influences the how the students learn. Personally I believe that classrooms should not just be run with the students in rows of desks with the teacher standing in the front of the room talking. I believe that classrooms should incorporate different teaching styles to try to incorporate as many different learning styles as possible so all students have a chance to excel.…

A few years ago like when I was 11 or 12 a lot of things were going through my mind of growing up and being a teenager. I knew this was going to be a big step for me and my surroundings, but I was ready for it. A thing that I always kept in my mind was turning 15 fast because my parents were always really strict with us. One of the things that they didn't let us do is put on makeup or paint our nails. I hated that because all my friends would do it and I was the only one that wasn't allowed to.…

As a teenager I have never thought about what the hardest, or best part of being a teen has been, I usually just live with it because it is my life and it is everyday. Sitting here, thinking about it, being a teen is one of the hardest stages of life, but it's also one of the best. I would say it's hard because you are expected to act like an adult, all emotions are everywhere and everything you do as a teen defines you as an adult. It could be the best because your not treated like a baby no more, people trust you to make the right decision and you get more freedom. Even though it can be a hard time i would say that you always have people around you who will always be there for you, they will always have your back.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
