Mini Grant Proposal for Informational Text Library The purpose of this project is to provide ESOL students with needed resources to expand their comprehension and knowledge with a variety informational text. The majority of my students come from diverse cultures and low socioeconomic conditions and they do not have resources at home or the ability to seek out available resources outside of the school. Adding valuable informational reading materials for the students to read and become inspired by will support the students in becoming productive, litterate citizen of our society. Students that are able to read informational text independently and proficiently are better prepared to be successful in life. (Duke, 2004) Comprehension, language skills, content knowledge and academic vocabulary will increase with continual exposure. The students will have the opportunity to read a larger assortment of non-fictional genres on a variety of reading levels. The enhanced informational text library will increase student literacy achievement by providing students with ample and additional up to date resources to engage learning. Students will gain insight through various genres and the different strategies needed to decode and read informational text. With the implementation of the “Informational Text Library” students will be exposed to different levels of non-fiction text and a mixture of genres that will provide more opportunities for independent reading and to be read to.
