These four simple yet disturbing words are the appalling message that we send to our students if our libraries of public schools are closed down. It tells us that literacy has become insignificant. The truth is that even though it may seem that in our day and age, in the new digital world that something tangible such as a book may seem redundant but in fact books and reading books have only become more important.
When Will Schwalbe said “Books are the most powerful tool in the human arsenal” that was not all he said. He continued on to say “Books are the grandest entertainment, and also is how you take part in human conversation”. A society that does not read books, how bad could that be right? You would think it would not be too bad but in if we look to Bradbury’s warning it would be deemed so.
The people in the text are unable to think independently. The people are unable to have meaningful conversations where instead they watch lots of television, drive fast and listen to the radio where the radio sets are attached to their ears. On top of this, the firemen of the city start fires instead of putting out fires where they burn the houses of people who own books.
Work, study and leisure have become screen-based, online and virtual. There is no doubt about that. Some may question the need for high levels of literacy in a digital age. However, the ability to read and write has never been so important. When you are communicating online, more than ever you need the ability to use words, the power of description, and the gift of storytelling. Whether it is a Facebook post, a text message or a daily blog, good use of words is an essential element of communication.
