Reflective Essay: My Interest In High School

Improved Essays
Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.

My second essay, the reporting essay, was what I considered the first test of my skills. The first essay was a personal narrative and therefore I found myself more engrossed in it. I found Part A, the short assignment, to be helpful in writing the introduction paragraph in my essay and finding the key points for the body of my essay. I had not

I immediately jumped onto the computer to view your comments and feedback. A few items that stood out in your feedback to me were my topic sentences weren’t as strong as they could be; I had some grammatical errors with my commas verses semi colons and with fragmented sentences. I spent my next few essays improving these items. When you were generous and offered us the option to improve one of our assignments I jumped at the chance to prove to myself that I could improve my essay and as a bonus I was able to finally achieve the A grade I wanted.

Looking back at the changes in my writing style and the expansion of my knowledge on the different types of writing while taking your class has improved my skills and I find myself enjoying the writing process from beginning to end albeit only in your class, and only when I have an assignment due. I won’t lie and say I enjoy writing now, but I do have a better understanding and knowledge of the subject and expect to use my honed skills in the

My tenth-grade experience summed up in one word would be “impactful”. It impacted me in a way that my previous school years could never compare to. The past few years in school involved compliments from teachers who believed I had the work ethic and the smarts to be put in an honor’s class. Only for them to never put me in an honor’s class. The phrase “you should be in the honor’s classes” rung repeatedly in my head to the point where it didn’t seem like a compliment anymore, it seemed like a constant jab at the fact that I wasn’t in the honor’s classes.…

For most of my papers I had a pretty good understanding of what my purpose needed to be for each of them. I would have to say that I struggled more with the reading response essay more than the others because I realized that I wasn’t quite understanding what the assignment was for that paper. I liked that the essays were more personal so it made it easier to know who my audience was and what I wanted my purpose to be. I was happy with my first essay because I really tried to make the stories and memories come to life. Assignment 1 was easy also because it was something that many people experienced and went through.…

Progress Paper This is a reflection of my evaluation on my progression from the first essay I wrote to the second. Looking back at the first essay I wrote in this class titled “My Experiences” and the second essay I wrote titled “The Variety of Family Structures in Today’s Society” I noticed several things. I had wording choice and punctuation errors in both essays, but my body paragraphs had good development. I needed to elaborate more with certain topics that I brought up, but my thesis statements and conclusions were good.…

Prior to taking ENL 110, I was concerned if I would be able to handle a college writing course. Growing up in the inner-city it was difficult to learn the basic foundations of writing such as grammar and punctuation. As an avid reader, I have had only my ears to rely on to make the appropriate corrections and build sentences. I stepped into the course afraid to write papers, but I was hungry to learn my weaknesses and strengths. This portfolio is a reflection of the progress I have made since I started this course to the brutal end.…

It’s an odd day when you find someone who has a fair amount of therapeutic knowledge, went to school to gain it, and isn’t even old enough to be a high school graduate. Today is one of those odd days. I went to a therapeutic high school for the end of my freshman year, and all of my sophomore year. Over the past three months, class ENC1101 has taught me some major lessons in English writing. My expectation coming into this class was to become a better writer, at least in my eyes. The different writing assignments were helpful to me using research and asking questions when I was stuck. My progression has included me writing essays, MLA format as well as discussing classmate’s papers, and becoming open to others criticisms about my work. Most importantly I have learned how important English is.…

I decided to repurpose my essay from the first unit. After looking back through my essays, the cultural analysis essay was my weakest and the one I struggled with most. It also happened to be our first major essay. Instead of going the conservative route and choosing my best essay to repurpose, I wanted to repurpose the cultural analysis essay for a few reasons. First, I thought it would be most convenient for the multi-modal aspect of this assignment because my original essay involved pictures that I analyzed.…

Going from eighth grade to ninth is a frightening idea to any uprising freshman. For me, I was more than pleased to embark on this new journey called high school. What I wasn't prepared for was the completely different grading scale, joining extra curricula, and becoming accustomed to this new found freedom. I made a wise decision to focus only on my grades instead of trying to join clubs, organizations, and sports. The irony in this is that all our advisers and assistant principles were telling me the exact opposite.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
