The article TV, Audio & Technology – Hurting or Helping Literacy by Jim Trelease is article about Dr. Ben Carson, who is a very successful doctor who was one of the finest Brain surgeons in the world. At the age of 33 John Hopkins University named him head of pediatric neurosurgery. This article talks about how Dr. Ben Carson was raised by his mother in a “fatherless inner-city home” (Trelease, n.d.)by a mother who had no more than a third-grade education.

It made me think a lot about my own childhood and how as a child my dad would not allow us to go outside, watch tv until we done our homework. This was a great article to read it was an eye opener. Today there is much use of technology not only at home but inside of the classrooms as well. Schools are doing away with books etc. and leaning more toward the use of tablets or I pad. However, for my classroom I would like to implement more uses of books, such as history, dictionaries. I would have the students look up the definitions to their vocabulary words by using on a dictionary in class. I will also when ask what the definition of a word means have the students to take the time to look it up out of a book instead of on the web. I would also keep a set of encyclopedias in the classroom and have the students to write a report on something /someone within one of the encyclopedia using on the encyclopedia its self as the only source of …show more content…
I chose this brochure because it obtains a lot of useful information on the benefits of reading, it also offers percentages of the benefits. I like that it talks about the consequences of dropping out of school, and show how the more educated you are the better job you can obtain when out of school. I feel that all too often parents now days don’t look toward the future, they don’t think about how not knowing plays a big part in their child’s life in the future. And this brochure to me paints a good picture with all the information that is provided within this
