All this time when I was chatting it up with my friends and having a great time being involved and loved by my friends and teachers, there were kids in the class that felt the way I had felt in my Indigenous class. Because I was so focused on making sure myself and my friends were happy, I forgot about making other people feel comfortable. I am highly influenced by John Dewey’s theory of progressive education. Progressive classrooms focus a great deal on hands-on experiences, integrated curriculum, and curriculum that emerges from the individual learner. I believe that children learn best when they are given the opportunity to learn from their own experiences, as well as, build off of these experiences. Dewey wrote his pedagogic creed in 1897, and while the language of the creed is quite antiquated, many of its components are present as the framework of many early childhood and elementary programs. As a child, my definition of social studies was learning about historical events by reading them in a textbook that weighed more than me at that time. I thought we learned about past events to help prevent these types of events from ever occurring again.
