Personal Narrative: My Experience At Balfour Collegiate

My experience at Balfour Collegiate in Regina, Saskatchewan began much like others. In grade nine I wanted nothing more but to be accepted. I was sincerely lucky in the case that Balfour was one of the smaller schools in Regina, so within time I found my place. How I found my place was involving myself. At the grade nine open house almost every other student stressed, “Get involved! It’s the best way meet people and find your place!” This statement was so true. I never particularly new who I was until I began playing sports, taking performing arts classes, and gaining a voice within the SRC. Things came together quickly and by the end of grade ten I felt I knew who I was, and I was happy with who I was.
However, as I headed into grade 12, things began to change. I had never experienced any kind of uneasy feelings in class or any kind of alienation from other students. When I first got a taste of an unwelcome vibe was in a class called Indigenous Studies 30. I had been in Indigenous Studies before because it was a very hands on and visual class, which how I learned best. However, the first day of this class felt different from past years. All this time when I was chatting it up with my friends and having a great time being involved and loved by my friends and teachers, there were kids in the class that felt the way I had felt in my Indigenous class. Because I was so focused on making sure myself and my friends were happy, I forgot about making other people feel comfortable. So as a teacher, my goal is to take down the boundaries of isolation to some of those kids. Encouraging cliques and different personalities to merge will not only help students to get involved, but to create an environment where everyone is involved and feels wanted and safe.
