My Definition Of Social Studies In The Future Classroom

Improved Essays
As a child, my definition of social studies was learning about historical events by reading them in a textbook that weighed more than me at that time. I thought we learned about past events to help prevent these types of events from ever occurring again. As a child, social studies was not a subject that I hated, but it was a subject that could put me to sleep. I don’t even remember learning that much about social studies in elementary school. Once I got into high school is when I realized that learning about social studies was more than the study of historical events, it is the study of people, places, events, cultures, and current events. It is important to teach social studies because students need to learn about past and present events that …show more content…
I want to be able to use all the different types of learning styles and incorporate them into my lesson to try to help each student out. In addition, I believe that it is important to integrate education with environmental factors and social interactions. Everything I plan on teaching my students I will try to show them how it will relate to a real world situation that could happen to them now or in the future. In my future classroom, I will lean more towards a student-centered classroom. This type of classroom setting will give the students a chance to interact with other students and create communication and decision-making skills. Students will also be given an opportunity to learn differently in the classroom by learning a topic by group work, role-playing, interviewing other students and having debates in a classroom. I believe in blending humanism and constructivism in a classroom. As a future educator, I see my views relating to the ideas of Johann Friedrich Herbart. His philosophy deals with respect to a child individualism, the moral strength of a student and connecting what you have already learned previously to help towards learning a new topic. I see my views are like him because I want to respect my students and let them grow mentally. I want to be the one who challenges them and gives them the chance to develop while learning and experiencing new and struggling situations. I want the student to always be able to apply what they learned in school to the actions that go on in the world around

As my interviewees were explaining to me their opinions and views, I noticed a lot of connections between what they were saying and what I have learned or talked about in class. There is never a bad question when there are discussions in class, and the questions themselves are valued more than the answers. My professor uses a variety of teaching methods because each student has a Personal Learning Plan and different learning preferences. This is seen in our “What’s MY Style?” mini assignment from week one, where we learned about our personal metacognitions.…

Given the increased access to information in the last twenty years, it is shocking to see that social studies taught in the same way as they were taught thirty years ago. Walk down most hallways during the school day, and you will see the glazed over eyes of students that have to listen to facts that will never obtain any type of relevancy for them. This is not to say that lecture does not have it's place, but we really need to involve students in history. The easiest way to accomplish this is through the outlets students already use to show interest in things. Media such as books, movies, and art should be incorporated on a much more frequent basis to help students associate with the past.…

In order to be engaged and involved in classroom learning children need to see themselves represented. If a child is not able to see themselves in certain roles they will deem those roles unattainable and not try to reach them. I do not believe that African American literature should only be required for African American students. It is important that teachers are able to depict all races and genders in the books they choose. Books about young white adults are quite common and could be seen as normal.…

My goal in the future is to be a foreign diplomat to the two countries that shape me; Mexico and the United States. I danced around school trying to find classes, organization or clubs that will help me reach my goals, in other words I was dancing the Jarabe Tapatio with the school as my partner. During my dance the steps that help me twirled closer to my dream was any social studies class, Y.A.G.A, and to no surprise U.i.l.…

Before taking this class, I had a whole different outlook on what I would be learning, but I am grateful that the instruction I had made me reflect on the kind of classroom and practices I believe are important especially when it comes to teaching social studies. Practices and approaches that I would have never considered including into an elementary classroom curriculum such as research, flooding a terrain model, and role play have opened up my eyes and created a very different vision of my social studies classroom. In thinking about what children need and keeping their interests in mind, I honestly do believe that when students are learning about social studies, they need more than to just memorize names, dates, places and to worry about…
