Are You A Witness? The first Nike shoe was designed with a waffle maker in 1971. The purpose behind the idea was to create a shoe with more traction for the runners that wear the shoe. Nike has grown from being a distributor for a Japanese shoe company, to a designing its own shoe with a waffle maker, to becoming multi-billion dollar athletic wear company. As the company has grown, so has its partnerships and advertisements, and with that growth it has made came incredible opportunities to partner with incredible athletes. One of its major partnerships is with one of the most recognized basketball players, LeBron James. The main reason behind this to recreate the emotion felt by similar advertisements that featured the well recognized basketball player, Michael Jordan. The reason behind Nike and LeBron James making the advertisements black and white is to attract older people who watched Michael Jordan play basketball. As it has been surveyed by harrisinteractive.com, more eighteen to thirty-six year olds prefer James to Jordan, however, people forty-nine to sixty-seven prefer Jordan. The purpose is to imply that James may in fact become the new Michael Jordan and to attract older fans of Jordan to James. They also create black and white advertisements to hopefully duplicate Jordan’s profits and popularity. Michael Jordan’s shoes known as Air Jordans create $2 billion in a single year in revenue for Nike, according to buisnessinsider.com. This occurred not only because he was an astonishing athlete but he had amazing black and white advertisements. Whereas LeBron James has only made $340 million for Nike this past year. The color signifies that not only is another famous basketball player creating his career, but that he, James, is not like any other advertisements or people. Jordan was in the league before James, it is said that according to espn.go.com that James idolized Jordan and that is the reasoning behind his jersey number. However, Nike uses the number to not only show that LeBron James is number twenty-three, but to also show that he can be just as terrific as Jordan. The purpose of relating him to Jordan with the number is to encourage older viewers who grew up enjoying watching Jordan play to also watch and enjoy James play. The greater amount of people who recognize him and his jersey number will associate him with the emotion they felt watching Michael Jordan play basketball.
