Experiences are enhanced for everyone involved when interactions are enriched with the foundation of life skills. Equipping those with these skills will give individuals more control over their health (World Health Organization, 2018). I believe that Kiro Mental Health and Addictions properly fortify personal, developmental and life skills that will guide their clients through their journey of health.
Kiro Mental Health’s core skills classes are specific to teaching stress management, self-esteem, anger management and communication, are beneficial in preparing their clients to better understand themselves and their mental illness. Additionally, Kiro’s meditation and mindfulness groups really help clients rejuvenate and teaches them how to be mindful and regroup themselves when they encounter adverse situations. By educating clients on how to handle stressful situations and be mindful of their surroundings and personal presence, they enhance their ability to deescalate themselves, handle stressful situations properly and perform better self-care. Rather than genetics or lifestyle choices, the environmental, social and structural factors in which we work and live determine our quality of health. All the social determinants of health have colossal impacts on an individual’s mental health and wellbeing. By diminishing social exclusion and enhancing education individuals with mental illnesses would be more understood, supported and included.
Over fifty percent of individuals experiencing mental distress, who commit suicide are unemployed and fewer than four in ten employers say they would recruit someone with a mental health problem (Coverdale & Long, 2015). These shocking statistics exploit the social determinant, social exclusion as a potential area for immense change. Those suffering mental illness still find themselves excluded from many aspects of life, such as occupations, proper health care, resources and supports, as well as community life (Coverdale & Long, 2015). Social isolation can lead to deterioration in mental health and suicide. Social exclusion can be detrimental to one’s self worth and dignity (Coverdale & Long, 2015). Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s (2004) report states that the main causes of social exclusion are stigma and discrimination, underestimating individuals’ capabilities, lack of responsibility, lack of ongoing support to allow people to work,
