Mental health is defined as a state of wellbeing in which the individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community. A mental health illness is a diagnosable illness that affects a (young) person’s thinking, emotional state and behaviour wherein it’s a significant problem within the Australian population as it has become increasingly apparent. Unfortunately, the stigma around mental illnesses stays the same even though access to accurate information increases each year to educate everyone of it, yet the shame attached to these disorders somehow still remain. ABS states that 1 in 4 young people will experience some type of anxiety disorder in any one year - around one in 6 females and one in 10 males. A survey was created for class of students (12 respondents) with a series of questions about the topic of anxiety. 3 in 4 of the respondents aged 15-16 said that they have experienced anxiety before and 5 in 6 said they know someone with anxiety. 1 in 3 people said they didn’t know how to help someone with anxiety and it was hard for them to ask someone if they’re ok. Sleeping, eating, meditating, physical activity, reading, listening to music, talking to family and friends are all answers for how they calm themselves if they’re feeling anxious with physical activity being the most common. 1 person said that they don’t understand the significance of anxiety which could possibly be why there’s a stigma around it still. Overall, the respondents weren’t too uninformed about anxiety but there’s definitely still a stigma around it, meaning it’s not informed enough and needs to be more educated about. Contributing factors to developing an anxiety disorder are trauma, stress buildup, personality, having blood relatives with anxiety and drug and alcohol use. Another contributing factor to anxiety is school. School can be extremely stressful at times which can cause a buildup
